Council adopted Hear By Right standards on 17 April 2003. The Cabinet member Councillor Mary Weale acts as Champion for young people. This commitment is reaffirmed in the Youth Charter. The ‘teenagers to work’ scheme for looked after young people enables youth to undertake work experience around the Council with the support of elected members in the Social Services. Councillors participating in I’m A Councillor Get Me Out Of Here and are supporting other youth participation initiatives such as the debating competition.

John is currently looking at a Furness Youth Parliament Group and matrix manages the Furness Participation Officer. John ensures that participation is at the forefront and promotes involvement at higher managerial levels. John is also championing the participation of young people and children with disabilities along with the Furness Participation Officer looking at ways to promote inclusive participation throughout Furness.
