Systems

Setting up structures for children and young people’s involvement is in some sense the easier task. Challenging established adult systems and ways of working, power and attitudes may be harder to tackle. Yet, if we don’t, progress will be short lived and attempts at active involvement will be ineffectual, frustrating and damaging. Systems are needed to support and sustain activity and record outcomes. Organisations may want to involve children and young people at short notice. But care should always be taken to consider the impact on them and to ensure practice is safe and sound, thinking through children and young people’s consent, safety, access, rewards for involvement and support needs.

Furness Locality has a Child protection policy as well as Complaint procedures that are prevalent in every team. Each staff member must hold a current and valid CRB check.

Some individual teams have their own risk assessments for young people’s participation depending on the individual or activity.

The Furness Participation Officer devised a transport policy for young people and children in 1997 along with a risk assessment agreed by Margaret McIntyre and consulted with young people and children on a further policy for the Barrow Childrens Home.

At the Barrow Childrens Home and Hart street short breaks home there is a Verbal Complaints procedure and complaints book to enable all young people and children of different needs and abilities to take part safely.

To comply with the Data Protection Act 1998 consent forms for all individuals featured in photographs must be completed. There are two variations on the consent forms, one for children and one for adults.

Has taken away the involvement of young people who need to buy furniture and resources for their move to independence.
Their choices are now taken away

Budgets for rewards and incentives need to be negotiated with young people and policies written to ensure they are fair.
Relevant participation budgets and systems need to be established to support the active involvement of young people and children.
More co-ordination of budgets for participation throughout Furness. Pooling money to meet targets and needs of many groups, partners etc…

Support for children dealing with Loss in the widest remit.

Funding for activities that enable groups of Looked after children to get together and share their views about fostering services and how they can be improved.
