Skills and knowledge

Building the skills, knowledge, confidence and capacity of children and young people is crucial for their participation to make change happen. Access to information they can understand is also important for them to be able to make informed choices and decisions. For adults, training and support is also essential to overcome the stumbling blocks of how to begin and how to manage change, to share power and to work effectively to reduce the risks and maximise the benefits. One valuable additional result of such training will be a wider change in adult perceptions of children and young people.

Settings then have to show how they have involved y/c and what difference it has on the service they provide.

The Foundations of Youth and Community Programme at Brunel University provides an avenue for those staff involved in youth and community work either part-time or on a voluntary basis to achieve accreditation for their involvement and progress in their careers. Additionally young volunteers have completed part-time youth work training courses with the Face-to-Face programme and are undertaking Foundation training through Brunel.

All staff are regularly offered localised training in areas such as ‘Action on Disability’ and diversity training, which they then share with those they work with in practice.

Opportunities for young people are promoted through schools, youth projects, voluntary organisations, the KCCentral website, and local press “The Royal Borough” newspaper.

Good practice is demonstrated throughout Education Libraries and Arts, Social Services, Environmental Services and KCCentral.

Currently KCCentral has undertaken a SMS Text Messaging Project to be used as a corporate resource to provide user-friendly access to information for young people at a level that is suited to their needs and requirements. This has been developed in consultation with young people, promoting their active involvement and involving them in leading the entire project to completion. It provides the councils Business Groups with a way of extending opportunities to all young people, improving communication, consultation and engagement with the Borough’s young people. The launch video for the service has also been developed by a group of young people.

Young people led Participation and Hear by Right Training for School Nurses and Health Improvement Specialists

LCRCHS is committed to involving young people in the design, delivery and evaluation of its service. As a first step in this process, we have provided training to School Nurses and Health Improvement Specialists. The training was coordinated by the Participation Lead for Children’s Health services (seconded from Connexions Leicestershire) and took a young person led approach.
