Work experience, volunteer and HE/FE placements are made available throughout the year within museums and galleries and a mentor and artist shadowing scheme is active in Arts Development The Service has registered with the Arts Award scheme, which provides children and young people to develop their skills and experience by managing their own events or projects or conducting research within the current exhibitions and event programme Vinvolved – 8 young people volunteered for the consultation. This counted towards 4hours of their volunteering certificate. We are hoping to develop more volunteering opportunities based on the kind of things they would like to do. Young People work as volunteers in significant numbers of community centres. Young People are employed as trainees in the youth work and administrations settings in the Learning and Children group. The council work with Connexions on the peer-mentoring scheme. Young People have recently worked on the Beacon Council bid. Business Groups have employed young people in a variety of roles. As early as 2002 they have acted as peer researchers, and from 2003 they have been commissioned as mystery shoppers extending into all Business Groups whilst becoming the official mystery shoppers of the Council. Young People have also worked as trainers and peer educators particularly after their accumulation of a wealth of experience and achieving the GCSE Global Youth Work Certificate. Moreover some young people have undertaken face-to-face youth work training and others have worked as play workers within the Community Learning and Arts Business Group. Greater opportunities have been provided with the ‘Teenagers to Work’ Work experience programme designed for people in care, lasting 2 weeks and offering placements all around the Council. Young people have also been employed through the Education Business Partnership, enabling them to work for a least a year within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, offering a salary of £12000 and opportunities for development. Alongside this young people have opportunities to become magazine writers for the KCCentral website and are also employed on staff selection and recruitment panels where the incentives may by high street vouchers.
